Trade Talk Today K - Day 1
Show transcript
00:00:02:
00:00:04: It
00:00:21: all starts with a K and it all starts today.
00:00:25: Finally, after three years of waiting.
00:00:28: the world's number one trade fair for plastics and rubber.
00:00:32: Okay, starts in Düsseldorf, and I'm so happy to be able to welcome you here on Trade Talk today.
00:00:38: Until the fifteenth of October, we are going to be here with different guests from different parts of the industry talking about what is going on.
00:00:45: And that's going to be happening, of course, on the fair grounds as well.
00:00:49: It's such a huge fair.
00:00:51: There's so much going on, and this is the place to be if you are part of the plastics and rubber industry.
00:00:56: This show, as I said before, is the show where we're going to be talking to wonderful people.
00:01:00: Today, I'm going to be joined by someone very special.
00:01:03: I'll tell you that in one second, and also another person on the show in a couple of minutes.
00:01:07: It's going to be Frank Dornbosch, who is Field Application Engineer from Stoibli Tech Systems.
00:01:12: So he's coming up in just a couple of minutes.
00:01:14: But now... We have the director of K. Thomas Franklin.
00:01:18: It's great to have you here today.
00:01:19: I know you were so busy and I hope you're doing well.
00:01:22: Did you sleep last night?
00:01:23: Yes, a little bit.
00:01:24: Okay,
00:01:25: good.
00:01:25: Before I ask you all these very important questions, I'm going to let us warm up a little bit and ask you some quick questions and get your very quick answers.
00:01:35: So we have the first question.
00:01:37: Coffee or tea to start the day?
00:01:39: Coffee.
00:01:40: Okay, that was an easy one.
00:01:41: Morning run or evening gym session?
00:01:44: Morning around.
00:01:45: Oh,
00:01:45: wow.
00:01:45: Did you do that this morning?
00:01:46: Not this morning, but sometime in the morning I go to the gym into something.
00:01:50: Very good.
00:01:51: Casual chats at the booth or formal panel talk?
00:01:55: Casual chats.
00:01:56: Okay.
00:01:57: Jazz or disco?
00:01:58: Disco.
00:01:59: Okay.
00:01:59: Audiobooks or ebooks for winding down?
00:02:03: Ebooks.
00:02:04: Ebooks.
00:02:05: Multitasking.
00:02:06: or single focus?
00:02:08: Multitasking.
00:02:09: Absolutely.
00:02:11: Produce in Germany or expand internationally?
00:02:15: Expand internationally.
00:02:16: Alright.
00:02:17: Social media networking or real-life meetups?
00:02:20: Real-life meetups.
00:02:21: Absolutely.
00:02:22: Of course.
00:02:23: Paper or plastic bag?
00:02:26: Plastic bag.
00:02:27: And remote work or office buzz?
00:02:30: office bus.
00:02:31: Okay, you just said disco, so that means you're going to be dancing at the party on Saturday for sure.
00:02:37: Yes, and I'm really looking forward to it.
00:02:38: Absolutely,
00:02:38: the exhibitor's party.
00:02:40: We can really enjoy the show and the community with everyone from the industry and do some partying after such a long time of preparation of the show.
00:02:50: But before you get to dance, you have to work a little bit, and you haven't just started working now.
00:02:54: You've been working on the cave for three years, which I cannot imagine is such a long time.
00:02:59: There's a lot of things that have been building up, I'm sure.
00:03:02: It's like putting together an Olympic event.
00:03:04: So tell me what it's like and what is the biggest challenge or the biggest thrill to be putting together a fair this big.
00:03:12: It's a very good comparison because K are the olympics for plastics and rubber and K is happening only every three years and it's a mega event here at Messe Düsseldorf.
00:03:22: so the whole exhibition ground is fully booked.
00:03:25: so we're using all our exhibition halls and not only in the halls.
00:03:29: we find some exhibitors.
00:03:30: we also using big parts of our open fairgrounds the open area.
00:03:34: we do have some exhibitors coming with their own buildings there as well and coming to challenges of organizing such a mega event.
00:03:42: And I would say there are two big challenges for our team.
00:03:45: Normally, if we prepare the show, first of all, if we do the allocation of all our exhibitors.
00:03:51: All together we have more than three thousand and two hundred exhibitors coming to K-Show and to find the right spot for everyone to do the allocation in advance.
00:03:59: And this we already did last year is sometimes a big challenge for the team because some exhibitors asking us, well, we do need special measurements to present a machine or special technology.
00:04:10: And then it's sometimes a little bit difficult to change the floor plan and to give everyone the right space so that they can present themselves.
00:04:18: The second bigot.
00:04:19: Second biggest challenge I would say is also to bring in the machinery for the move in and for the build up for the show.
00:04:27: So we started already three weeks ago with the first trucks arriving at the fairground to unload the big machines and then we start to put the big machines in the empty halls at first and then we put the stamp construction all around.
00:04:41: So this is also one of the big challenges to organize such a mega event.
00:04:47: The last fair was three years ago and things have changed a lot, I'm sure.
00:04:50: What would you say is the biggest shift that has happened?
00:04:54: What is the biggest change?
00:04:55: Where is the industry headed?
00:04:58: I know a lot will be talked about in the next eight days, but still, where do you think it's headed right now from the stand?
00:05:03: So the big shift during the last few years is definitely a shift to a more sustainable industry.
00:05:09: So circular economy is one of the big and important topics and got more and more relevant during the last few years.
00:05:15: Okay, you just said more than three thousand tournet exhibitors from almost seventy countries and you have visitors or you're expecting visitors from almost about a hundred and seventy countries.
00:05:23: So there are a lot of people coming.
00:05:25: It's a global summit.
00:05:26: It's a huge thing.
00:05:28: How do you ensure that it's not just a big event but also something that is relevant for the industry and for the visitors?
00:05:34: So relevance not only comes from the size of the show, because as I mentioned, we're using the whole exhibition ground.
00:05:39: It's a mega event.
00:05:40: It's a big event, but it also it's also about the content.
00:05:44: And for that reason, we always form in guiding topics for the topic for the show for each edition.
00:05:50: And this year, it's the power of plastics, green, smart, responsible.
00:05:54: And we're addressing some of these topics like circular economy, digitalization and also caring about people.
00:06:00: And yeah, the content is also very important for everyone to come here because because it's for sure, first of all, for our exhibitors.
00:06:06: They want to see what's on the booths, on our exhibitors, what kind of innovations, new technologies they can see.
00:06:13: But it's also about the content in our high-caliber program we are offering.
00:06:17: So I just want to mention two highlights of our program, which is the special show in hole number six with the title, Plastics Shaped the Future.
00:06:27: Here we have panel discussions, keynotes, and some networking events.
00:06:32: And if you want to see some best practice examples for the circular economy, I highly recommend to you also visit the Power of Plastics forum by VDMA in the open fairground.
00:06:42: I've been looking online and people have been sharing what they've been preparing.
00:06:46: And you said it's a huge fair, but it turns out to be also something very familiar.
00:06:52: Companies are having parties beforehand, they're putting on costumes, everybody's so excited.
00:06:59: Still, you just talked about what's going on, the circular economy is so important, digitization is very important.
00:07:04: Are there any trends that you kind of kept off the agenda because you said people are not talking about that anymore?
00:07:11: No, we do not keep any topics of the agenda.
00:07:14: So if we start to prepare the show, we are working very closely with our exhibitors.
00:07:18: We have an exhibitor advisory board.
00:07:20: We are also working together with the trade associations and also with the science.
00:07:24: And then we are trying to figure out what are the topics which are interesting and important for the industry in the future.
00:07:31: And then we are really open and all the topics are on the agenda.
00:07:35: And then we have to focus for sure on some of the topics.
00:07:37: And it's an industry event.
00:07:38: And for sure we are addressing closely and... with a priority, the topics for the industry itself.
00:07:47: But we're also addressing topics for social responsibility, for the environment and so on and so on.
00:07:55: And for that reason, we're also inviting, for example, policymakers, NGOs to join us also for the special show in hall number six, for example, in panel discussions or keynotes.
00:08:05: Okay, I want to talk about how you're feeling right now because you already said you didn't go for a morning run today because there's just too much going on.
00:08:11: And there's been a lot of stuff going on in the last years, in the last weeks, obviously.
00:08:15: When you step onto the floor on opening day, which is going to be happening in just a couple of minutes, you did have a big press conference yesterday.
00:08:21: But still, what is the feeling like?
00:08:23: And what do you think?
00:08:24: And what goes through your mind?
00:08:26: I'm really happy to see that everyone from all over the world is coming.
00:08:30: I think the most emotional, personal moment for me is always like when we're opening the gates on the first day of the show, because then you see everyone is coming to the fair and really excited to see what's going, what they're going to see on the show.
00:08:45: on the floor and this is really something very emotional to see that all the works of preparations are worth to prepare such a nice event and to welcome everyone from all over the world back to Düsseldorf.
00:08:55: And
00:08:55: do you have any small habits that you do so that you actually manage to keep through until the very end?
00:09:01: I try at least in the very morning to get into the halls when the halls are still empty.
00:09:06: So because it is really interesting also to see such a big show and all the machines.
00:09:10: just quietly because for sure you can imagine if you see all the big machines in our halls there is some noise during the day.
00:09:16: you see all the people and it's crowded.
00:09:18: but if you go to the exhibition halls and see all the prepared stands in the machines and it's more quiet it's also a special feeling and something special you can only see if you work here and experience it.
00:09:31: You can see the excitement in your face.
00:09:32: You can see the big smile on your face.
00:09:33: And I'm sure at the end of the eight days, it's going to be even bigger because people are going to be so happy that they've been here.
00:09:38: I wish you lots of success.
00:09:39: Thank you very much.
00:09:39: Great day today.
00:09:41: You were talking about all the preparation beforehand and we took a look at what was put together, what happened in the halls before everyone was there because first.
00:09:50: It's the machines that have to be put in, so there's space for everybody later on.
00:09:53: So we're going to take a look at that.
00:09:54: all the best to you, and I'll see you in a couple days for sure.
00:09:57: Thank
00:09:57: you very
00:09:57: much.
00:09:58: Let's take a look at behind the scenes.
00:10:16: Thank you.
00:10:58: As you can see, a lot of preparation goes into such a huge trade fair like a K. And I think this was probably the last time.
00:11:07: that we see the halls this way because from now on they're going to be filled not only with the machines but also with lots of people.
00:11:14: One person is missing right now because he's standing right here with me.
00:11:17: I'm very happy to have him in the studio with me at Trade Talk today.
00:11:21: Frank Dornbosch, you are a field application engineer for Stoibli and I hope you are doing very well.
00:11:26: Yes, I'm fine.
00:11:26: I hope so.
00:11:27: You too.
00:11:27: I am very well.
00:11:28: Thank you so much.
00:11:29: I'm very excited because the case started and there are eight days ahead of us that are going to be so filled with things.
00:11:34: Before we get started about strawberry, about your job, let's do some quick questions.
00:11:39: Starting with the first one, tea or coffee?
00:11:42: Definitely with coffee.
00:11:43: Coffee.
00:11:43: Good choice.
00:11:44: A bioplastics or recycled plastics?
00:11:47: For me, bioplastics.
00:11:49: Night owl or early bird?
00:11:52: Definitely early bird.
00:11:53: Early
00:11:53: bird?
00:11:53: Yes, of course.
00:11:55: Scheduled meetings or spontaneous chats?
00:12:00: Spontaneous chats.
00:12:01: Coffee to go or coffee in a café?
00:12:05: Coffee to go.
00:12:06: Oh, really?
00:12:07: Yes.
00:12:09: Reading fiction or nonfiction?
00:12:12: Reading fiction.
00:12:13: Big data or intuition?
00:12:17: Intervision.
00:12:17: Very good.
00:12:18: At least that's what I think.
00:12:20: Beach vacation or mountain escape?
00:12:22: Mountain escape.
00:12:24: Of course.
00:12:25: Formal dress code or jeans and sneakers?
00:12:28: Jeans and sneakers are better.
00:12:29: And audiobooks or e-books?
00:12:32: Audiobooks.
00:12:33: Because I'm a long time on the road, so it's easier for me.
00:12:37: So I hope you didn't need very long to get here this morning.
00:12:39: You had to get up very, very early to be here.
00:12:41: So you didn't have to listen to an audiobook this morning.
00:12:43: You were probably preparing in your head for a K. So let's talk about Stoibli and what makes Stoibli stand out in the plastic industry.
00:12:53: Solutions to Stoibli offer and yeah why are you here at the cake?
00:12:57: Yeah I'm
00:12:57: here because Stoibli offers for every process step in the plastic production process the right solution and currently Stoibli is also a global the on-list player who offers a holistic complete solution for and product changeover.
00:13:15: We start from energy connections, go on mode loading, mode clamping, gripper changes, and also robotic automations.
00:13:23: And this we can identify and specialize for every customer who comes to us.
00:13:28: Which is so important that you're realistic, that you have a whole view on what the customer needs from the beginning to the end, because sometimes people forget that and then they get stuck at one point and can't get any further.
00:13:41: What typical challenges do your customers face, and how does Stoibley address these issues?
00:13:48: I mean, apart from the holistic way of going at it.
00:13:51: First big question is where to start, because if you imagine if you have a complete production, you have not only one machine or only one mold.
00:13:58: We have several molds and machines, and then you have to figure out which is the best one to start and which one is feasible and also economic.
00:14:05: And in this way, Stoibley helps our customer to figure out what's the... most or best way to get a start into optimization of your product change over time.
00:14:16: So give us some examples for the solutions that you offer.
00:14:20: Yeah, we made a lot of smart workshops face-to-face by the customer at their plans, and then we get a lot of information and experience about this.
00:14:31: And in case of this, we created several templates and software.
00:14:35: to help our customer to really efficiently figure out which is the right solution, the right machine, and to start to optimization and also keep as flexible as possible and if possible as flexible as before and the standardization process during the production planning.
00:14:54: Okay, let's see.
00:14:55: I'm going to come visit you and your stand at the fair.
00:14:57: Which latest product or innovation are you presenting?
00:15:00: What can people expect to see?
00:15:02: Yeah, we have really two smart new solutions, innovative solutions that we bring to the K-Show.
00:15:09: The first one is a really ultra-compact SMI multi-coupling, which is really dedicated to smaller machines.
00:15:16: And in case of this, we also developed our new magnetic clamping system with synth blades that we can now involve also in small machines to bring out the most productivity out of your machine.
00:15:30: So you would suggest people come to you first and then go to the other places to figure out how to implement what they want to do, right?
00:15:38: Is that the best idea?
00:15:39: Yes, of course.
00:15:40: That's another point that I want to mention because during the configuration phase for the next standards.
00:15:48: most of the time our customers forget to think about during the purchasing process of the IMN next machine.
00:15:57: and let's say don't think about Q&C solutions.
00:16:01: and especially for this and our experience from the SMED workshops we generated a template to figure out if it's efficient for you and what potential and money you waste if you don't think about it and therefore if it's interesting for our customer please come to us at our booth age eighteen in hall eleven and then we can figure out directly what is your cost losses and also your potential that we can calculate in only I would say two minutes and then you can figure out your new machine with new QMC equipment and be fit for the future.
00:16:40: So you're not only highlighting solutions for small tonage machines, you also have good coffee.
00:16:45: I know that because you're talking about before, which is something very important.
00:16:47: So you get two things when you come to visit you at the stand.
00:16:50: Tell us a bit more about these machines and why this development is important and what industries are going to benefit most from it.
00:16:58: The new products are especially made for small tonnage machines because here you have really less space inside of the machines, especially between the tie bars of the machines and the molds.
00:17:08: And therefore you have to bring small and smart solutions and connection devices inside of the machines to make them more productivity and also to make a reproducible mold change.
00:17:25: So those are the biggest challenges in implementing the changes in existing plants?
00:17:29: What are the biggest challenges when you're implementing these in the plants?
00:17:34: One of the biggest challenges is if we have existing machines and existing molds, it's really hard to figure out which solution is economic and feasible.
00:17:42: Because, as I told before, small machines have less space, so less space for technical standardization and probably it's not possible.
00:17:51: to implement it for this.
00:17:53: And therefore, we have to go onto the new machines with our calculating template, as I mentioned before.
00:18:00: Then you can have more degrees of freedom to implement these technical solutions.
00:18:05: And also, if you have to retrofit it to old machines or existing machines, we have also generated here a new flexible solution that can compensate that.
00:18:15: you will be also full flexible during the standardization process.
00:18:19: You have been, or your company has been a long time exhibitor since nineteen seventy seven at K. What makes this trade fair such an important platform?
00:18:29: For us, it's very important to bring our innovations and ideas to the customer and see also the market trends in the plastic industry.
00:18:37: And for me personally, it's also very, very important to see my colleagues from all over the world and getting exchanged with them and learn from everybody and all the other worlds.
00:18:48: And it's wonderful that you're presenting these innovations and all these ideas and ways to change the industry and help everyone grow in these difficult times, one must say.
00:18:56: So thank you so much for being here today on Trade Talk Today.
00:18:59: I wish you a wonderful K. It was great to have you, and it was great to have all of you viewing or watching with us today.
00:19:06: We will be back tomorrow, and we would like you to join us with our guests on the show, Marius Berleman, who is COO of Düsseldorf and Castenham, CEO from Omnia.
00:19:17: And if you are walking around the trade fair today, which I'm sure you will be, make sure you check out Plastic Shapes the Future stage, which we already heard from Thomas Franken, or our guided tours.
00:19:29: Just look online.
00:19:30: We have lots of them, different kinds.
00:19:32: Check them and you can have a great time being guided around this huge fair because there's so much going on.
00:19:38: I wouldn't even know where to start.
00:19:40: We start today with Kay.
00:19:42: So have a wonderful time.
00:19:43: Thank you for joining us and we'll see you tomorrow.
00:19:46: This show was brought to you by
00:19:48: Stoibli.
